The story behind our new high school sports newsletter for subscribers

Dear D&C Subscribers --

We're about 30 years into the age of the internet, and one thing that's clear is news consumption habits continue to evolve.

One growing way people find news online: emailed newsletters.

Of course, you get it. You're reading this one, right?

Here in the 2020s, the idea from the 1990s of a website home page as equivalent to a "front page" of a printed newspaper simply isn't true for everyone anymore. Some of you might click on www.democratandchronicle.com once or more per day, but many of you do not.

Instead, you might find our news stories through social media posts on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. You might find a D&C story when you're googling for where to park at the Rochester Jazz Festival. Or maybe your cousin is texting or emailing you links to a story they like or didn't like.

But increasingly, it is emailed newsletters that are becoming preferred by many D&C digital subscribers. I think that reflects the curation that goes into our Daily Briefing and food and drink and other newsletters, including Your Week in Rochester. Keeping up with news online can be a Herculean task, and a curated email with five links breaks through the digital din nicely.

In a way, our D&C emailed newsletters have become the new "front page." We choose stories we believe matter; you trust our judgment and read them.

So it is that we are launching new subscriber-only newsletters this summer. First on deck: High School Sports.

A few highlights to look forward to when you subscribe:

  • Updates from each of our three high school reporters on the sports they cover.

  • Exclusive information you won't find anywhere else.

  • You'll know first about big projects publishing, including All-Greater Rochester teams.

Want to check it out? Please click here to subscribe.

Special thanks to D&C News Director Scott Norris and sportswriters James Johnson, Marquel Slaughter and Robert Chavez for making this possible. They are heart and soul of our Section V sports coverage along with our team of photographers. Please support their work by subscribing to the new high school sports newsletter created solely for you, our loyal subscribers.

Thank you.

Each week, usually on Sunday evenings, we'll email you highlights of our reporting and videography created exclusively for our subscribers. And we'll share with you some "behind-the-scenes" tidbits on how such journalism comes to be.

Below are some other stories written only for our subscribers you may have missed this month.

Thank you for your continuing support of local news in Rochester. We’re greatly appreciative.

Sincerely,

Michael Kilian
