From Town & Country

It was a hairstyle that made headlines. As Meghan Markle headed to her wedding reception, her hair was up in a messy bun, with loose tendrils framing her face. The newly minted Duchess's breezy California aesthetic was something new for most royal watchers, who were used to Kate's signature blow outs and perfectly pinned buns, and the Queen's 'do, which has remained unchanged for decades, and the style was heralded as bold, and regarded by some as controversial.

Now, as Meghan steps back from her royal duties, hairstylist George Northwood is finally sharing the story of how that iconic look came to be.

“It has been an enormous privilege and a lot of fun working with the The Duke and Duchess of Sussex over the past two years,” Northwood wrote on Instagram this week, posting numerous photos of his styling collaborations with the Duchess of Sussex.

“I have enjoyed every minute collaborating with this amazing couple who not only champion small businesses but have taught me so much about diversity, equality and the importance of good mental health.”

Northwood also spoke with British Vogue more specifically about the Duchess's wedding reception hair. While Serge Normant styled Meghan for her ceremony, it was unclear who had done her hair for the reception, until now.

“The messy bun purely came off the back of making the hair both appropriate and adhering to royal protocol, and modern at the same time,” he said, confirming that he was the one behind the style.

“We wanted it to be up, because a lot of the time it was appropriate for it to be up, but we didn’t want it to be too formal. We always wanted it to be refined imperfection – that’s what sums her up.”
