Story City Herald sports round-up: Norse baseball team gets two wins, SB team goes 3-1 during week

The Roland-Story baseball team earned a pair of Heart of Iowa Conference victories and the Norse softball team went 3-1 last week.

The Norse baseball team took down Prairie City-Monroe by an 8-3 score May 31 and edged Perry by a 5-4 decision June 1 to improve to 5-3 on the season and 4-0 in the HOIC. Both victories came at Norsemen Field in Story City.

In the win over PCM the Norsemen overcame a 3-1 deficit by scoring seven unanswered runs over the fourth and fifth innings. The fourth inning was the big frame for Roland-Story as the Norsemen pushed five runs across the plate.

Brett Schmitz was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs for Roland-Story in the win over PCM. Thomas Matthes went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, Hesston Johnson was 1-for-1 with a run, walk and RBI, Dillon Lettow singled, walked twice and scored two runs, Carter Loof was 1-for-2 with a run and Matthew Phelan 1-for-3 with a run.

Matthes got the win against PCM. He threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings and gave up four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Alex Berends threw the other 2 2/3 innings for the Norsemen. He allowed three unearned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Roland-Story overcame a 4-2 deficit to defeat Perry. The Norsemen tied the score at 4-4 with two runs in the fifth inning then won the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Schmitz was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Jackson 1-for-4 with an RBI, Johnson 1-for-3 with an RBI, Matthes 1-for-2 with a run, Carter Loof 1-for-1 with two runs, Cooper Loof 1-for-2 with a double and a run and Phelan 1-for-3 with a run. Berends also picked up a hit for the Norsemen.

Anthony was the winning pitcher after giving up four earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 3 1/3 innings. Ben Greenfield threw 3 2/3 innings scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks in relief.

Norse softball team down WM, Perry and Greene County

The Roland-Story softball team picked up conference victories over West Marshall (5-0), Perry (9-2) and Greene County (5-2). The Norse fell to Saydel by a 6-0 score Friday, putting them at 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the HOIC.

The Norse defeated West Marshall May 31 at Roland. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and coasted to victory behind a three-hit masterpiece by Madison Geise.

Geise struck out 12 batters and only allowed three hits and two walks going the distance on the mound. Ally Ringsby hit a solo home run, Macy Friest doubled and drove in a run, Alyssa Jones was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Alynn Solberg 1-for-3 with two runs, Reagan Faber singled and scored and Kamryn Lande had one single.

The Norse knocked off Perry June 1 at Roland. They broke open a close game with five runs in the sixth inning.

Faber went 1-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, Geise and Lydia Oetker were each 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Solberg 2-for-3 with a run and Friest 1-for-4 with an RBI. Ringsby also walked and scored a run, Jones scored a run and Lande picked up an RBI.

Geise got the win after giving up one run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts in three innings. Freshman Addy Sabatino allowed one run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout in three innings and Jones threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts and one walk.

Roland-Story scored two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings to build a 4-1 lead then cruise to victory against Greene County June 2 at Jefferson.

Ringsby went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and two runs and Geise was 2-for-3 with three RBIs against the Rams. Faber also singled, walked and scored three times.

Geise went all seven innings against Greene County to get the win. She gave up nine hits, but struck out 11 batters and issued just one walk.

The Norse were held to four hits and they struck out 13 times against Saydel pitcher Dakota Lake in the loss to the Eagles Friday in Des Moines.

Solberg was 2-for-2, Oetker doubled and Hayden Walters singled for the only Roland-Story hits off Lake. Faber walked twice and stole a base.

Geise took the loss after giving up six unearned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 5 2/3 innings. Sabatino threw a scoreless 1/3 of an inning against Saydel.
