Stranded climbers spend night on Alaska glacier waiting for rescue, park officials say

Two climbers spent the night on a glacier in an Alaska national park after becoming stranded, rangers said.

The climbers were on the Ruth Glacier in Denali National Park and Preserve when they reached out for help Sunday, May 21, the National Park Service said in a news release.

They got stuck on the peak after their ropes got damaged and they lost gear, officials said.

The two then asked for help through a Garmin inReach device and reported having minor injuries. The device allows users to send messages and share their location in areas without cell service.

But weather conditions kept rescuers from getting to them the night they reached out for help, officials said.

Rescuers reached them the next morning and used a 250-foot line to bring them to a staging site, officials said.

Then they were flown to Talkeetna, about 35 miles southeast of Ruth Glacier.
