Stranded man clings to tree in rushing North Carolina river. See harrowing rescue

A man was rescued from a raging river after he was stuck clinging to a tree, North Carolina officials say.

State highway patrol said it was called to the Haw River in Alamance County on Saturday, April 29, after the man lost his “water vessel” and became stranded. He was in the middle of the river clinging to a tree.

Crews attempted to rescue the man by boat several times but were not successful, they said in a Facebook post. Eventually, a helicopter crew came to rescue the man.

When the helicopter arrived, a harnessed rescuer met the stranded man in the water, a video shared by the highway patrol showed. The man was grabbing a tree surrounded by rapid-like waters.

Once the rescuer made contact with the man, the two were pulled from the water into the helicopter, the video showed.

Officials said the man was taken to a nearby hospital for further medical evaluation.

Alamance County is about 60 miles northwest of Raleigh.
