Stranger Things season 5 is now officially in production, streaming service Netflix has confirmed with a tantalising cast photo.

Netflix Geeked posted a photo of the cast of Stranger Things on January 8, with some actors holding copies of the season five script. The photo is entirely in black and white apart from the red neon "5" sign on the wall.

The caption read: "Take it all in, nerds. the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is officially in production."

The show, which follows a group of kids being pulled into a supernatural series of events involving a mystical, dangerous world known as the Upside Down, last aired in 2022 when Netflix dropped the acclaimed fourth season.

That season introduced Jamie Campbell Bower as the new big bad — Vecna — while Sadie Sink's Max was left in dire straits in the season four finale. It sets up the show for a tense fifth and final season.

Writing on the fifth season was paused during the 2023 writers' strike but it resumed once the strike had stopped. Now, it is fully in production with returning cast members including Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, and Joe Keery, among others.

However, season five won't be the end of the Stranger Things universe as there are several spin-off projects in the works, including an animated spin-off series and a prequel play titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

Speaking about the show coming to an end, Brown said she is ready to finish Stranger Things.

"When you're ready, you're like, 'All right, let's do this. Let's tackle this last senior year. Let's get out of here'," Brown said last year before the strikes.

"Stranger Things takes up a lot of time to film and it's preventing me from creating stories that I'm passionate about. So I'm ready to say, 'Thank you, and goodbye'."

Stranger Things seasons 1-4 are now streaming worldwide on Netflix.
