KEY ACTION Heard Mayor Steve Smith administer the oath to Brandon Warman, promoting him to police sergeant.

DISCUSSION: Warman’s wife, Ally, placed the sergeant's pin on Warman’s collar. Warman has been a full-time police officer for four years.

In another matter, a celebration of life of the late Neal Deckerhoff will be held from noon to 3 p.m. June 26 at the gazebo in Franklin Park. There will be a Chinese auction held to help raise funds for a headstone and to help pay medical costs. Deckerhoff was a village employee for over 25 years.

OTHER ACTION

• Passed an ordinance entering into a contract with Newton Paving for $170,935 to pave streets in the village. Newton was the low bid through a county paving project. The ordinance will be ratified at the June 21 meeting.

• Passed a resolution, by emergency, to submit to the board of elections a 3.7-mill, five-year tax levy on the Nov. 8 ballot for police protection. The village currently collects a 1.5-mill five-year tax levy for police protection. If voters approve the new levy, the 1.5-mills will not be collected.

• Heard the final coat of asphalt will be applied to Maple Avenue this week. Also, the curbing on Fernsell Avenue is almost completed and that street will be paved.

• Passed, as an emergency, an ordinance amending a pay ordinance rate of pay for a police sergeant.

• Heard Van Wallbrown has requested to be a part-time police officer, effective immediately. Wallbrown had been promoted to full-time status.

• Adopted an ordinance employing Hunter Duerig, as a part-time police officer, effective June 8.

• Passed an ordinance employing Brandon Mackey as a part-time fire 120/EMT-B.

• Heard the decision to place three lanes with a turn lane was not a decision of the Ohio Department of Transportation but was approved by four of the six council members. When ODOT paves this year, the three-lane concept will be added on Wooster Avenue. Village Solicitor Terry Seeberger said he drew up the resolution for support from the village for ODOT to install the three lanes.

• Lauded the Strasburg softball team for winning, its eighth state softball championship, on June 4. The Lady Tigers have been to the state tournament 17 times.

• Thanked Nick Haswell for his constant attention to the flowers in containers, planted between the traffic lights.

• Bob Ciekanski, representing the soccer club, said netting will be installed between the soccer and baseball fields for safety measures.

• Pastor Jason Rissler thanked the village for the new playground equipment at the park and the individuals that established a soccer program.

• The police responded to 247 calls from May 1 to June 1. Police are increasing traffic patrols and tickets are being issued.

• Councilman Marty Zehnder thanked Bruce Metzger, cemetery sexton, for the good job mowing the cemetery.

• Pastors of the village churches will be offering prayer prior to each council meeting.

• A benefit soccer tournament will be held Aug. 11-14 at Franklin Park. About 80 youths participate in the soccer program.
