Strasburg school board hears state report card results

KEY ACTION: Strasburg Superintendent Vince Lindsey and curriculum director and gifted coordinator Emily Palmer reported on state report cards.

DISCUSSION: Palmer said the district received five stars in the gap closing category, which is for student subgroups such as gifted, chronic absenteeism, and graduation goals.

Lindsey said the district exceeded all goal areas set by the state in the district’s subgroup area. He said there are five category descriptions: achievement, progress, gap closing, early literacy, and graduation. The district earned four stars in achievement and graduation rate. A rating of three stars were given for progress and early literacy.

In another matter, the board approved, by a 4-1 vote, to establish an education requirement for substitute teachers for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school year. The resolution permits the district to use substitute teachers who do not have a four-year degree. Board member Diana Flickinger voted no, saying she was not comfortable with the resolution.

OTHER ACTION

  • Heard a presentation from Dave Dennison, owner of Tuscarawas Buckeye Power Wash, about cleaning the sidewalks and doing other cleaning jobs outside the school.

  • Approved the transfer of Peyton Speicher to a new position of intervention specialist-cross categorical.

  • Accepted the resignations of Blake Campbell, permanent building substitute teacher; Tiffany Sensel, special education secretary; and Beth Linerode, classroom aide.

  • Accepted a $10,599 donation from the Harold and Marjorie Rosenberry Tuscarawas County Foundation for Project Lead the Way and $500 from the Strasburg Lion’s Club for the teaching staff.

  • Approved salary increases for Gary Spinell, dean of students/athletic director; Sheila Doerschuk, elementary principal; and Sharon Smith, secretary to the superintendent and transportation director. Each will receive a 2.5% pay increase in 2022-23 and in 2023-24.

  • Heard participation has increased in all sports offered in the district.

  • Granted Sheila Doerschuk a $5,500 stipend for the federal programs for the 2022-23 school year.Approved a new position of assistant to the treasurer/accounts payable.

  • Recognized September students of the month Amelia Spidell, high school, and Ericka Shotwell, middle school. Both received plaques sponsored by the Lion’s Club and the school district.

  • Recognized Chase Willis of Willandale Golf Cart Sales for the Ohio School Board Association Business Honor Roll.

  • The book fair will be held Sept. 30 to Oct. 7.
