Stratham residents displaced after house fire: Cause of blaze under investigation

STRATHAM — The town Fire Department is investigating the cause of a house fire on Brown Avenue Sunday.

At approximately 2:50 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22, Stratham firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire in a single-family home at 12 Brown Ave. Police reported heavy smoke from the roof of the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home.

According to Stratham Fire Chief Jeff Denton, the residents were home at the time of the incident but evacuated safely. One person was treated for minor injuries at the scene, he said.

The department said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

When crews arrived, the fire was in the roof area crawl space, making it difficult for crews to access. A first alarm was called by command staff for water supply and manpower at 3:07 p.m., and a second alarm was requested at 3:28 p.m. for additional resources.

Denton said multiple tanker trucks were requested to aid in water supply because Stratham does not have a municipal fire hydrant system.

The fire was under control at 4:31 p.m., and the scene was cleared by 6:32 p.m., according to Denton.

"There was pretty heavy damages to the back side attic, the roof is all burned away (and) there's water and smoke damage," said Denton. "The house is pretty much water-damaged all the way through, and they (the family) are displaced from what I understand."

Assisting Stratham were fire departments from Greenland, Exeter, Brentwood, Durham, East Kingston, Epping, Hampton Falls, Hampton, Kensington, Kingston, Newfields, Newmarket, North Hampton, Portsmouth and Rye.
