Street closures start in lead-up to Republican debate in downtown Milwaukee. What to know.

Streets around Fiserv Forum will be closed to traffic in the days surrounding Wednesday's Republican presidential primary debate at the arena in Milwaukee.

A stretch of northbound North Sixth Street between West Highland Avenue and West Juneau Avenue downtown will be closed to traffic through Thursday, according to the city Department of Public Works.

The lane will be used for debate equipment, including generators, an HVAC system, a restroom trailer and parking for media trucks.

Starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, closures and no parking zones will be implemented on both sides of the following streets in a perimeter around the arena, according to police:

  • North Sixth Street from West McKinley Avenue to West State Street

  • West Juneau Avenue from North Sixth Street to North King Drive

  • North Fifth Street from West McKinley Avenue to West Juneau Avenue

  • North Vel R. Phillips Avenue from West McKinley Avenue to West Juneau Avenue

  • North Vel R. Phillips Avenue to North King Drive via West Highland Avenue

Road closures could change "depending on any unanticipated factors that may arise," Milwaukee police said in a statement.

Those attending the event must go through a screening point to park in the parking structure on North Fifth Street and West McKinley Avenue, and in the lots at North Vel R. Phillips Avenue and West State Street, and at North King Drive and West Highland Avenue.

The debate, which takes place Wednesday at the downtown arena, will begin at 8 p.m. and last about two hours.

It will be co-moderated by Fox News anchors Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier.

Eight candidates will be on the stage Wednesday night, with former former President Donald Trump skipping. The others are:

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis

  • Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley

  • U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina

  • Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy of Ohio

  • Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie

  • North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum

  • Former Vice President Mike Pence

  • Former Arkansas Gov, Asa Hutchinson
