Which streets is Akron resurfacing in 2023? Here's the list

As winter gave way to spring, so spring gives way to Ohio's most notorious time of year: construction season. If Akronites look closely, they can see the orange cones blooming from the pavement.

Roughly 54 miles of roadway will be paved throughout the city this year, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan announced Wednesday as he released the 2023 street resurfacing list.

Akron's plans include resurfacing for the Ohio Department of Transportation and engineering projects in the city.

Over $5 million of Akron's budget has been allocated for this year's resurfacing program, alongside $1.5 million for equipment replacement.

In a news release, Mayor Horrigan said by year's end, the city will have paved almost 400 miles of road since he took office in 2016. Horrigan declined to seek a third term, and the office will go to fellow Democrat Shammas Malik — who won the seven-way May 2 mayoral primary and is running unopposed in the November general election.

“It will take many more years to realize the full impact of increased focus and funding on our roadways, but we are in a much better place with our roadways now than we were five or 10 years ago," he said. "I want to thank all of our service crews who make this improvement possible each year."

What are some of the busier streets slated for resurfacing this year?

Several stretches of South Portage Path through Highland Square and West Akron will be repaved, along with these thoroughfares:

  • North Hill: Cuyahoga Falls Avenue, from Chalker Street to North Main Street and from Murray Avenue to Gorge Boulvard.

  • West Akron: Diagonal Road, from East Avenue to Copley Road.

  • University Park: Brown Street, from East Exchange Street to Wheeler Street.

  • Firestone Park: North Firestone Park Boulevard, from Beardsley Street to Brown Street.

  • Sherbondy Hill: East Avenue, from Biruta Street to Manchester Road.

What variables could affect the 2023 paving schedule?

The paving list and schedule are subject to change due to various circumstances such as weather and underground utility work. If streets are being used as highly traveled detour routes for various construction projects, resurfacing on those roads may be delayed. Work on streets designated as "alternate" programs will be performed if additional funding becomes available and time allows.

What factors determine Akron's street resurfacing priorities?

In creating its resurfacing list each year, the city of Akron grades the condition of each street and paves the “worst first,” taking into consideration traffic conditions and clustering streets together to reduce mobilization costs and maximize efficiency.

How can I find out when work will take place along my driving routes?

Signage will be posted on each street several days before resurfacing work is scheduled to begin. Traffic is maintained as much as possible during this work, but on-street parking is prohibited on the dates posted. Periodic updates to the program will be posted on the City’s social media pages (Facebook: City of Akron, Ohio – Mayor’s Office; Twitter: @AkronOhioMayor.) Residents with specific questions are encouraged to call the Mayor’s 3-1-1 Action Center for more information.
