Streetwise: This new plant-based soap shop is opening soon in downtown Wausau

WAUSAU - A new location for a Mississippi-based soap franchise is coming to Washington Square in early June.

Married couple Brian and Julie Fox are opening the northernmost location for Magnolia Soap and Bath Co. June 2 at 320 N. Third St. in Wausau.

The shop sells plant-based hand and laundry soaps, bath bombs and skin care. The Foxes plan to host a grand opening event for the store with door prizes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 2-4.

Magnolia Soap and Bath was started in Mississippi in 2016, according to the company website, and has grown to 37 locations mostly in the southern U.S. This will be the company's first Wisconsin location. The nearest location had been in St. Charles, Illinois.

The Foxes heard about the company from a coworker and started the franchise "as something we could do together as a family-owned business," Brian said. While they received training from the company, they hand-pour the soaps in Wausau.

The Foxes are Wausau residents who both have worked in health care. While Julie plans to run the store full time, Brian says he will help when he's not at his day job flying medical helicopters for Aspirus. However, Brian said, "we're both really active" in all parts of the business.

They plan to hire a couple of employees to help them run the store, but in the meantime, Brian said, "we're very much looking forward to (opening day)."
