Strictly Come Dancing pro Amy Dowden is hopeful that she can return to the dancefloor this year after battling breast cancer.

The Welsh choreographer, whose celebrity partners have included Danny John-Jules, Tom Fletcher and James Bye in years gone by, announced her diagnosis last month and has since undergone surgery.

Speaking to The Mirror, Dowden provided an update on her Strictly future, explaining: "If I only have radiotherapy I'll be back on Strictly this season. Once radiotherapy is done there'll be nothing to stop me, there's no pressure but Strictly is leaving the door open.

"It's having something to work towards," she added. "I'm visualising myself on that Strictly dancefloor.

"Just being back in the ballroom with the live audience, the adrenaline and the atmosphere. And the support from the whole Strictly family. We can choreograph around me doing things with lifting, putting pressure on my arm. You can adapt."

Still, the professional dancer is cautious about straining herself, as she is building back up her mobility and strength after the surgery.

"I have to be careful not to overdo it with my exercises if I want to be sure of getting my full movement back," Dowden noted.

"I am not allowed to put my arm behind my back at the moment. When I do lifts with my partner that is my body weight."

She added: "They have said for six weeks I can't dance, and then it's a gradual buildup. They haven't said when I will get full movement."

Dowden went on to reveal that the Strictly team is happy for her to 'guide' them in regards to her comeback later in the year.

Failing a main series role, Dowden would settle for a Christmas special cameo.

Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
