Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Denise van Outen has said she was almost "paralysed from the neck down" after sustaining an injury on the show.

The actress and presenter finished as a runner-up on the 2012 series of the BBC show, though revealed in a new interview that the injury was nearly a lot more severe.

"When I took part in 2012, a disc dislodged into my spinal cord and I needed an operation," she told the Daily Star Sunday.

"I was told that if the disc had gone into my spinal cord slightly more, I would have been paralysed from the neck down."

Recalling another injury when she took part in Dancing on Ice two years ago, Denise revealed: "Then, during Dancing on Ice in 2021, I fractured my shoulder in three parts.

"I can't blame anybody – I was in shows knowing there was a risk."

Meanwhile, Denise – who has been well known for appearing on Celebrity Gogglebox in recent years – last year spoke about her new relationship with partner Jimmy Barba following her split from former fiancé Eddie Boxshall in January 2022.

"When I started going out with Jimmy, we had to stay indoors for most of our first dates because we wanted to get to know each other outside of the public eye… So when we went on our very first date it was like we'd been let loose, we went crazy," she told Steph's Packed Lunch.

Speaking further about going public, Denise added: "It was reversed. Couples normally go out on loads of dates and then start staying in but with the situation, we just wanted to keep it private.

"It was really nice, we did a lot of talking… Also he hadn't seen me really dressed up. You know when you're at home, I was just casual because I didn't want to look like I'd made too much of an effort, even though I had planned what I was wearing.

"Then it was nice to get dressed up and go out."

Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
