Tim Minchin will also be performing – twice – and has created an original song just for this awards show.

Meanwhile, Emily Atack and Tom Allen will be interviewing the nominees and providing some top banter as part of an online pre-show show, which kicks off at 6pm on Friday (July 31).

Ayoade will be hosting his first TV BAFTAs, following in the footsteps of Graham Norton and Sue Perkins.

BAFTA has said that the awards ceremony, which is being broadcast on BBC One as usual, will take place "in accordance with current restrictions". Winners have been invited to accept their awards virtually.

It's also been confirmed that Idris Elba will be honoured with the BAFTA Special Award, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the TV industry, including his commitment to diversity and supporting new and emerging talent.

Idris, whose TV credits include Luther, The Wire and In the Long Run, said it's a "great privilege to be honoured" and that it's bound to help "shift the awareness and understanding of the diversity gap in entertainment".

"It's been a mission of mine to provide opportunity and access to emerging talent from diverse backgrounds in this industry, which is the same opportunity I received many years ago from open minded and diversity conscious casting," he added.

"I thank BAFTA for recognising myself and others who are dedicated to the same cause, as these are all necessary steps."

The Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards 2020 will be broadcast on BBC One at 7pm on Friday, July 31.
