'Strive to be kind': Hingham High grads pay tribute to late classmate
HINGHAM – Hybrid learning, remote schooling and the joy of mask wearing are memories the Hingham High School Class of 2022 will carry with them, as will the pain caused by the sudden and tragic loss of a classmate.
Being able to take off those masks and see each other fully again and finding ways to honor and memorialize their friend will no doubt stay with them as a reminder that tough situations can be handled and will pass, and that beauty and kindness can come from loss and pain.
Their graduation ceremony at the school’s athletic field Saturday brought those emotions and memories to the forefront, as the speakers reflected on lessons learned and what they hoped for themselves and their classmates moving forward.

Remembering classmate Anna Quinlivan
While the graduating class numbered 312, the absence of one classmate was felt by all.
Anna Gabrielle Quinlivan, 16, died July 31, 2020, from a heart attack following a run. The graduating class wore teal ribbons in her honor at the ceremony.
“Learning Anna had passed was a heartbreaking moment for her friends, family, teachers, peers and the community as a whole,” student speaker Elle Cavanaugh said. “We have been holding tight to her memory, but she should be here graduating with all of us today.”
Valedictorian Dominic Kanter echoed that point and encouraged his classmates to keep her in their hearts.
“We will always remember Anna, a treasured member of our class who did not get the chance to be here today,” he said. “As we each go on our own paths from here, let’s honor Anna’s spirit and strive to be kind, humble, grateful and resilient.”
Class President Luke Macdonald thanked his fellow classmates for continuing to honor Quinlivan.
“We lost her two years ago, but since then, we have not allowed her memory to fade,” he said.

He noted the several events, such as the establishment of a scholarship in her name and a recent dog walk that took place at Wompatuck State Park to commemorate the late teen's love for animals, have kept her spirit alive.
“Just last week, we dedicated a bench in front of the school to Anna to ensure that her legacy will never be forgotten,” he said. “The bench will sit in front of Hingham High forever, and future students will by and see her name on the bench every day.”
Graduation speakers turn to humor
Salutatorian Matthew Carr took a long look back to when he and his classmates began their education in kindergarten, saying he did so with tears streaming down his face when he realized he would have less time to devote to Mario Kart. In a similar show of self-deprecating humor, Kanter recalled throwing up freshmen year during a simulation of the Black Plague.
Cavanaugh, who was chosen by students, teachers and administrators as this year’s student speaker, read her meta-essay on writing her essay. In it, she poked fun at her own writing habits
“I tend not to start an essay until the night before it is due,” she said. “I always seem to find myself at 8 p.m. on a Thursday night searching for direct quotations and setting a timer because that’s the only way I can keep myself focused.“
Growing up in Hingham
While there is little doubt the Class of 2022 faced challenges most of those who came before and will come after them could not fully understand, Macdonald reminded everyone gathered that growing up in Hingham, and benefitting from all the advantages it has to offer, is something his class should not take for granted.
“No matter how chaotic life will be, Hingham will always be a constant,” he said. “What our town has provided for us these past four years, we are capable of providing the same to the places we visit and where we live in the future.”
