The Strokes Sing 'New York City Cops ... Ain't Too Smart' at Bernie Sanders Event as Actual Cops Attempt to Control Crowd

During an event in support of Bernie Sanders in Durham, New Hampshire, on February 10, rock band The Strokes performed their classic song ‘New York City Cops’ as local police were attempting to control a crowd of people that had rushed the stage.

The event led to a notably awkward moment at the end of the song, as lead singer Julian Casablancas sings the chorus of “New York City cops, they ain’t too smart” while he bumps into a barrel-chested policeman who has taken the stage next to him as protection from the enthusiastic audience members.

Before starting the song – their last of the evening – Casablancas mentioned a lighting issue that he referred to as a “safety thing from the cops” before saying that they would perform an “old favorite.”

In the middle of the performance, Casablancas encouraged people to join them on stage, resulting in around 30 people dancing and singing along with the New York natives.

Before the end of the song, a number of police officers appeared on stage attempting to control the crowd. Casablancas seems to ignore their attempts to intervene.

The Strokes closed the event, which took place a day ahead of the New Hampshire primary and had earlier in the evening featured appearances from Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sunflower Bean, Cynthia Nixon, and Dr Cornel West. Credit: Bernie Sanders via Storyful
