Strong odors cause school in Appleton to be temporarily evacuated, classes resume

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – The Appleton Area School District (AASD) says a strong odor due to ongoing construction caused Kaleidoscope Academy to be evacuated briefly on Wednesday morning.

Officials with the AASD told Local 5 that “there were some strong odors present in the building this morning due to the ongoing construction” and that students and staff were outside the building for roughly 45 minutes as the situation was evaluated.

Menasha considering closing elementary school

A letter sent to Kaleidoscope Academy families began by saying, “This morning, both students and staff were greeted with strong industrial odors upon arriving at school. We understand this may have been concerning for some of you. Our Facilities team promptly investigated the situation to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being.”

It was able to be determined that the odors did not pose any safety risks to anyone in the building, and the school district acknowledged that “such odors can be disruptive to the learning environment.”

As a precautionary measure, our Facilities team immediately took action to address the issue. They worked to increase the airflow within the building and made necessary adjustments to mitigate the odors. Additionally, students were temporarily held outside for approximately 45 minutes to allow for fresh air to circulate throughout the building. Classes are now in session and the school day will proceed as normal. We strongly encourage any students who left school due to concerns to return for the remainder of the day.
