Strong start boosts Plainsmen boys over Mustangs

Feb. 10—The No. 2-ranked Laramie High boys basketball team got the best of No. 4 Natrona County in a 57-44 road win Friday in Casper.

The Mustangs dug themselves into an early hole, scoring just five points in the opening frame. LHS dominated in the paint, getting all but three of its first-half points from inside the arc.

Jael Reyes made a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter to give the Mustangs life, but the rest of the team combined for just five points in the period.

LHS was led in the first half by junior Jaden Smith with eight points. Junior Neil Summers added three field goals in the first half.

The Mustangs had six different players score in the third quarter to cut the Plainsmen's lead to 34-27. Smith and junior Gabe Sanchez made one 3-pointer each in the third for LHS, while Max Alexander and Brayden McKinney converted one more apiece in the fourth.

Natrona County kept pace throughout the fourth with five made field goals, but couldn't close the gap. Friday's loss was the Mustangs' (12-4 overall, 3-0 in Class 4A Northeast Quadrant) fourth in a row after starting the season 12-0.

LHS had two double-digit scorers on the night, as Smith had a team-high 16 and Summers finished with 12. Alexander and Sanchez added nine points each, while McKinney scored eight.
