Strong winds cause power outages, damage across parts of Miami Valley

Wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour hit parts of Fayette County damaging everything from a semi-trailer, travel trailers and utility poles.

Traffic on northbound I-71 in Fayette County was completely shut down for part of Tuesday evening.

A semi overturned near Octa and blocked both lanes of traffic around 4:30 p.m.

“I thought I was finished,” the truck driver said.

He was okay but said it was one of the scariest situations he has been in.

The crash closed part of the highway heading north for about an hour.

About three miles north “Buckeye R-V” had several R-Vs topple.

A local storm chaser told News Center 7′s Haley Kosik that he saw several downed power and telephone lines around Jeffersonville.

Shawn Stuart said he has been storm chasing since the Greenville tornado last year.

He is working to become a certified storm chaser.

“Most people say it’s the adrenaline rush, but I just like helping people,” Stuart said.

Stuart shared a photo of a shelf cloud, a sign of a good storm brewing.

AES was able to restore power to most in the area, but as of 2 a.m. early Wednesday, there are still almost 900 people without power.
