Starting late tonight and extending into Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for all of Wisconsin as an approaching cold front could push wind chills to 25 below zero.

According to Cameron Miller, a meteorologist with the weather service, temperatures will start to drop in the Milwaukee area this afternoon and could go as low as 7 below zero overnight.

Wind chills will be dangerously low

The cold front causing these temperatures is headed directly for Milwaukee and will bring a low-pressure air system with it. Once this interacts with the current system in the area it is expected to cause winds as strong as 25 mph.

Miller said that these winds will result in wind chills that will likely range from 20 to 25 below zero — with 20 below zero being the threshold for calling a wind chill advisory.

Miller said the Friday morning commute will be bitterly cold.

“If you are heading to work, or dropping off your kids at school, make sure to wear gloves and bundle up because it only takes about 15 to 20 minutes to start to develop frostbite,” said Miller.

Temperatures should warm up as the weekend starts

Miller said the cold front will be a short one. Temperatures will linger in the single digits Friday, but the weekend is expected to bring temperatures above freezing with the early portions of next week having a chance to see highs in the 40s.
