Strong Winds Fan Wildfire in Athens Suburb

Strong wind gusts fanned a wildfire that broke out in in the mountainous Penteli suburb of Athens, Greece, on Tuesday, July 19, according to Greek news outlet Kathimerini.

Footage published by Christina Themelis shows the wildfire burning on Tuesday and flames still raging into the early hours of Wednesday.

National Observatory of Athens Director Kostas Lagouvardos, told Kathimerini that wind gusts reached 113 km/h (around 70 mph) early Wednesday. “The day will be difficult and dangerous in terms of weather,” Lagouvardos said, according to a machine translation.

The fire service said 485 firefighters and 120 vehicles were deployed. Firefighters from Romania were also at the scene, they said.
