Strong winds knock out power for thousands around Kitsap County

About 26,000 people lost power in Kitsap County as strong winds moved through the area and caused numerous outages in Kitsap County on Monday morning, according to Puget Sound Energy.

PSE's outage map showed that northern and southern parts of the Kitsap Peninsula were heavily impacted on Monday morning. PSE crews were heading out to the areas to assess the damage and determine what was needed to make repairs, said PSE spokesperson Andrew Padula on Monday.

PSE didn't have an estimated time of when the power will be restored overall, but estimated restoration times for specific areas are updated on its outage map at https://www.pse.com/outage/outage-map once the crew on scene of the incident knows more, Padula said.

All of the outages in Kitsap County were related to the strong wind in the area followed by the weather conditions that have affected the county throughout the past week and weekend, Padula said.

“Along with the heavy rainfall we saw this weekend, plus last week’s snow, just made the ground very saturated. And it just destabilizes trees, making them more susceptible to collapsing especially with strong winds,” Padula said.

A system brought wind gusts of 22 mph to 27 mph Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The strong wind will diminish throughout the day as the front leaves the area. But another strong front will arrive on Tuesday and strong winds are forecast through Wednesday morning, said NWS meteorologist Steve Reedy.

“The threat of power outages will basically continue really into Wednesday,” Reedy said. “As we see the winds ease on Wednesday, that threat will subside.”

Consistent rainfall is expected to fall on Tuesday and rain will get lighter on Tuesday night, Reedy said.
