Strong winds leaves thousands without power

GRAND RAPIDS — The National Weather Service said that a cold front that slid across Michigan Saturday packing sustained high winds left thousands of people in mid-Michigan without power.

"True to the season of 'November gales,' a strong low-pressure system passed through the region (Satruday)," the Grand Rapids office of the NWS tweeted Saturday night. "The NOAA buoy in northern Lake Mich(igan) measured waves to 17 feet."

The NWS said peak wind speeds at Lansing's Capitol City Airport were 60 mph. Elsewhere, Battle Creek Executive Airport reported a 59-mph gust. Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport saw a 64-mph gust, the highest recorded in west Michigan.

While much of the Greater Lansing area escaped without damage or power outages, southern Eaton County residents suffered power outages that are continuing.

Outages east of Olivet and south of Eaton Rapids, extending into Calhoun and Jackson counties, have left more than 2,800 Consumers Energy customers without service, according to the company's outage map.

Elswhere in the Great Lansing area, outages affecting about 300 customers stretch from west of Charlotte to south of Mason. An outage in the city of Lansing is reported affecting about 300 customers.

Small, scattered outages affect small areas throughout Ingham and Clinton counties.

Consumers' outage map does not include information on restoration times for most of the outages.

DTE Energy reports outages in the Williamston area affecting 300 to 1,500 customers. Those outages carry restoration times of 11 p.m. Sunday.

The Tri-County Electric Cooperative, Homeworks, also reported numerous outings across mid-Michigan. An area between Mason and Leslie included about 500 customers affected. No restoration time was listed on the company's outage map.

The company reported an outage affecting more than 100 customers west of Grand Ledge, and two separate outages affecting about 65 customers each north and west of St. Johns.
