Strong winds topple church steeple, narrowly missing Virginia Beach apartment complex

Strong winds toppled a metal church steeple Friday in Virginia Beach, narrowly missing a neighboring apartment complex.

The steeple on top of Galilee Episcopal Church was left sandwiched between the church and the Holly Hill Apartments buildings after strong winds blew it from the roof.

Virginia Beach dispatchers said the call about the storm damage came in around 6:30 p.m.

Galilee Episcopal Church is located at 3928 Pacific Avenue, near where the road intersects with 40th Street.

The steeple was toppled by gusty winds as vestiges from Hurricane Ian battered Hampton Roads Friday. Heavy rain mixed with a steady 30 mph breeze, with 55 mph gusts along the coast, and made for a wet and windy Friday.

This is a developing story.
