Stroud Township getting a Starbucks; Chipotle and Wawa proposed

Development abounds on Route 611 in Stroud Township, as the very first Chipotle in the Poconos has been proposed there, as well as another Wawa. A new Starbucks drive-thru has the township's final approval.

Stroud Township Supervisor Christine Wilkins confirmed that a Wawa and Chipotle project is currently in the land development stage with the township's planning commission. The project is proposed to sit on Route 611 between Staples and St. Luke's Physician Group, where the old Dealz on Wheelz Auto Sales once stood.

According to Wilkins, the Chipotle is proposed to be 2,325 square feet, with 34 parking spaces and a drive-thru. The Wawa is proposed to be a separate 6,049 square feet with eight fuel pumps. She said the developer's intent is to break ground some time soon, next year.

In a separate development presented by Posh Properties, a new Starbucks is coming to 1061 N. Ninth St. That was already approved by the township on July 18. An opening early next year is anticipated.

This new Starbucks location will be a walk-up and drive-thru only, with no café seating space. It will sit where the old Mattress Firm building is currently standing.

The Mattress Firm building will be demolished as part of the project and replaced with a new 1,300-square-foot coffee shop. It will sit on a 2.2-acre lot next to the CVS Pharmacy, across from the Weis supermarket.

"The development in Stroud Township is part of maintaining the revival of our buildings and change of businesses in our commercial corridors," said Wilkins. "It's good to see some of these properties that weren't otherwise being used to now be used for our residents. They will now bring in extra jobs and tax revenue."

A Starbucks will replace the former Mattress Firm at 1061 N. Ninth St., next to the CVS in Stroud Township. The building, seen here on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, will be demolished.

This proposed Wawa would be among the many other Wawa locations that have been sprouting in the Poconos in recent years. There is currently a Wawa under construction a few miles up Route 611, replacing the old, iconic Tannersville Inn. There is another new Wawa going to be constructed on Route 209 as part of the Smithfield Gateway project.

Another Starbucks will be constructed in East Stroudsburg, where Friendly's used to be in the Walmart plaza.
