Fire near 35th Avenue, Union Hills Road in Phoenix destroys auto parts store

Phoenix fire crews battled a structure fire near 35th Avenue and Union Hills Road on Thursday afternoon.

Crews were dispatched at about 2 p.m. for reports of a structure fire in the area. When they arrived, heavy fire and smoke were seen coming out of the roof of an auto parts store, Phoenix Fire Department spokesperson Todd Keller said.

A crew of more than 50 firefighters from multiple departments were able to gain control of the fire "within an hour and a half," Keller told members of the media at the scene.

A video shared on Twitter showed fire personnel extinguishing a fire at a Firestone auto shop near the area.

The origin of the fire has not been identified, but early reports showed that there was a car on fire inside one of the eight bays inside the auto shop, Keller said.

"Until our investigators do their work and get their report out, we won't know the exact cause of the fire," Keller told reporters.

No injuries were reported. Keller said crews were able to confirm everyone had made it safely out of the building, which is considered a "total loss."

The Phoenix Fire Department had said the intersection of 35th Avenue and Union Hills Road was closed in all four directions. The intersection has since reopened.
