Update: Student who was hit by a vehicle while crossing a SW Ocala street Thursday has died

A 13-year-old boy died on Thursday after he was hit by a vehicle while he was running across Southwest 20th Street in Ocala.

Authorities said the teen was transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and then to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where he died.

Ocala police officials said the teen, whose name was not provided, was riding with his mother on a motorcycle along Southwest 20th Street. Officers said the woman stopped the bike in the middle of the road because her son saw a friend across the street on the north side.

Police said the boy got off the motorcycle and ran across the street. He was struck by a vehicle.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. in the 3000 block of SW 20th Street.

A spokesman for Marion County Public Schools said the boy attended Liberty Middle School, and the vehicle that hit him was a district vehicle: an F-150 pickup truck that was pulling a trailer.

The speed limit on the roadway is 45 mph. Officers believe the driver was driving about the speed limit.
