Student achievements for April 28

Students of the month for April at North Star

North Star High School selected its students of the month for April. They are Caleb Grandas, Cali Knupp, Mark Monteith Jr., Grace Metz, Joe Tirko, Lily Schrock, Gunnar Lisbon and Caliya Shroyer.

Caleb Grandas is the son of Stacy Grandas and Rick Grandas, Somerset. He is a 12th grade college prep student who is a member of the Table Top Club.

Cali Knupp is the daughter of Keri and Greg Knupp, Gray. She is a 12th grade student who participates in Forensics, student council and yearbook.

Mark Monteith Jr., is the son of Robin and Mark Monteith, Hooversville. He is an 11th grade student who is the yearbook treasurer, a junior firefighter with Hooversville Volunteer Fire Department and he works at Shaffer's Bottled Gas.

Grace Metz is the daughter of Matt and Celina Metz, Jennerstown. She is an 11th grade honors student at North Star, who participates in basketball and the yearbook club.

Joe Tirko is the son of Chad Tirko, Hooversville. He is a 10th grade college prep student.

Lily Schrock is the daughter of Robyn and Chris Schrock, Boswell. She is a 10th grade honors student who is on the reading team and quiz team.

Gunnar Lisbon is the son of Adda and Van Lisbon, Boswell. He is a ninth grade honors student who is a member of the Spanish Club.

Caliya Shroyer is the daughter of Amanda and Jason Shroyer, Boswell. She is a ninth grade honors student who participates in volleyball, rifle and Spanish Club.

Katz is Jaycees student

Samantha Elizabeth Katz was selected as the Somerset Jaycees student of the month for April. She represents Somerset Area High School.Katz is the daughter of Alan Katz and Carla Katz, Somerset.

She is a senior who is a member of the Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society.After high school Katz plans to attend a four-year college and major in music.

She enjoys playing guitar and reading.

Meyersdale reading teams compete

After a two-year hiatus, the Meyersdale middle and high school reading teams returned to competition. The 2022 Interscholastic Reading Team competition was held April 7 at Forest Hills Junior/Senior High School. Megan Edwards serves as the adviser for the two teams from Meyersdale.

Middle school reading team members include Koda Minkus, Christine Wise, Dylan Fochtman, Austin Oester and Ethan Shaulis. A total of 16 schools competed in the event.

High school reading team members include Hope Canfield, Anna Stewart, Emilee Stewart and Devyn Shaulis. A total of 11 teams competed in the event.

Book lists for these teams include biographies, teen fiction and other titles covering a variety of topics. Authors on the list included James Patterson, Gary Paulsen and teen favorite Beverly Cleary. More than 20 teams competed in three rounds with 30 questions per round. There were 15 questions for each team with a chance to steal. Each team had 20 seconds to discuss before offering their answers.

Elementary team participates

Meyersdale Area Elementary School students in grades four and five have been poring over a list of books in preparation for the 2022 Interscholastic Elementary Reading Competition April 5 at Forest Hills Junior/Senior High School. The team placed third in the competition.

The elementary reading team included Addy Smith, Ava Steinberg, Lilly Eyer, Aubree Kenner, Leah Boyce and Easton Dom. Cay Helinski and Carrie Long serve as the advisers for the team.

This year’s book list included a wide range of titles and topics, from a book by Laura Ingalls Wilder to award-winning “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio. More than 20 teams competed in three rounds with 30 questions per round. There were 15 questions for each team with a chance to steal. Each team had 20 seconds to discuss before offering their final answer.
