A student was detained by Phoenix police after officials say he brought a handgun to Maryvale High School on Thursday.

Sgt. Brian Bower, a Phoenix Police Department spokesman, said officers approached the boy after school staff told them about the gun and chased him on foot for a short distance before detaining him and confirming he possessed a gun.

Bower said as officers detained the student, the department received multiple 911 calls mentioning someone actively shooting at the school, but this was not the case. He added that one student not related to the incident was taken to the hospital as a precaution for an undisclosed reason.

Bower didn't say whether officers arrested the student or whether he faced any criminal charges.

"Phoenix police are currently working closely with staff and administrators of Maryvale High School to ensure the continued safety of students, staff and community," Bower said.

The Phoenix Union High School District did not respond to a request for comment.
