Student shot and killed another student outside Pittsburgh school

A student has died after being shot by another student outside a Pittsburgh school early Wednesday, police said.

The incident in front of Oliver Citywide Academy occurred around 7:25 a.m., less than a half-hour before the building was scheduled to open, Major Crimes Cmdr. Richard Ford said at a news conference.

A suspect, who was spotted running from the scene, was taken into custody, according to police, who say they recovered a handgun.

The victim, whom police say was male, was pronounced dead after being hospitalized. Authorities have not determined a movie, nor have they named the victim or the suspect, but said both were minors.

“We believe, based on the information that we have and the video that we’ve been able to see, that we have the [shooter] in custody, so there’s no potential threat to the other schools,” Ford said.

Oliver Citywide Academy, which serves grades 3–12, canceled classes and all other school-related activities Wednesday. Any students who were aboard a bus headed to the building were diverted to another location. Several teachers were already inside the school and heard gunshots outside, Ford said.

Wednesday’s violence occurred a little over a year after a 15-year-old student was fatally shot outside the school in January 2022.

“It’s very frustrating,” Ford said Wednesday. “We worked really, really hard. We’ve worked with the schools. We continue to work with the schools. ... Any type of violence, any time there’s loss of life, it’s a tragic situation, but I am very relieved to know that there’s no more danger to the public.”

Authorities say an investigation into Wednesday’s shooting is in its early stages.
