Micheal Buck, Grand Coteau Assistant Police Chief spoke with News 10 about the incident.

“There was an altercation between two teenagers and one of the teenagers was stabbed with a pocket knife. At this point, we do not believe that those injuries are life-threatening and the suspect is being interviewed right now at the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, juvenile division,” said Buck. “Neither one of the individuals involved in this incident is actually from Grand Coteau or go to school here in Grand Coteau. That bus which picks up students at multiple locations was passing through this area in route to school in Opelousas.”

Shauna Sias, bullying prevention specialist, The Bully Box Passion, tells News 10 spoke about the effects of bulling.

“I am deeply disappointed in the inability of us to address the problem as it is and it is the fact that our children are not being properly educated on not just conflict resolution, but resilience and bullying prevention,” Sias explained.

Sias explains that if nothing differently is done about bullying, the problems will go unaddressed.

“We keep expecting these children to do something different from outside of what they see everyday. What have we taught them? Yes, they’re going to have altercations at school and at the bus stop. Why? Because that’s their world. No, the incident was not isolated. Children spend most of their day with their peers at school. 8 to 9 hours of a 24-hour day it’s spent at school. Two of those hours are spent being transported to school,” Sias said. “So technically, that is 10 hours a day that a child is in contact or in direct contact with their peers and then when they get out of school, they go home to social media. We’re going to continue to get children to react the way that they’re reacting because we haven’t taught them anything else.”

The investigation is ongoing. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
