Staff, students and special guests didn't wait until Memorial Day to get together around the grill and host a celebration.

In a recent gathering, students were recognized for breaking school math and reading achievement records at Shelby Intermediate School, a feat made even more amazing given the learning gap brought on by COVID-19, said sixth-grade teacher Amy Allen.

"The celebration was in honor of our team of 64 students breaking all previous records set by Shelby Intermediate School in our reading and math programs," Allen said in an email to The Star.

"Both of these are new school records and represent a year of hard work to overcome the COVID pandemic learning gap," said Allen.

A cookout to celebrate the success was held on Friday, May 13.
