Students at Beaver High School give back to community during Day of Giving

The spirits are high for the holiday season inside Beaver High School.

“The Day of Giving is a district-wide event, and on this day all Beaver kids spend it giving back to our community,” said Gary Liu, a senior at Beaver High School.

That’s over 800 students spread throughout the borough getting to work — from weeding outside the school and in the parks to stocking a pantry for students in need, even wrapping presents for residents who are homebound.

The list goes on and on, but the end goal was all the same: to help someone in this community.

“I think it’s important for students here (to know) that as a person in the community there is a lot to do and a lot to give back. Having that community connection is very important as you get older and move somewhere new,” said Georgia Engle, a senior at the high school.

The project is in its third year but continues to grow as more students choose to come to school to give back before heading out on holiday break.

“I think it’s about citizenship and recognizing they have a role and can be active rather than just passive members of the community, and I think that empowers them,” said Aimee Firmani, a teacher at the school.

As these teachers watch the final bags of clothes roll out of the school to head out to children in need, they hope their students remember all they’ve learned.

“Be kind and give to others. That’s what we hope to model for them and have them emulate from us,” said Heather Bixler, a Beaver High School teacher.

In total, there were nearly 25 activities that all happened in one day.

This group hopes their work inspires other school districts to start their own tradition.
