Students from the Carolinas compete at Scripps National Spelling Bee

The winner has been crowned after the 95th Scripps National Spelling Bee this week.

Unfortunately, it’s another year of no winners from the Carolinas, but several local students progressed through the rounds of the event in Washington, D.C.

A 14-year-old from Florida, Dev Shah, won the championship by spelling the word “psammophile” correctly, according to Reuters.

Earlier this year, six local students earned their tickets to Washington, D.C., by competing in a Carolina Panthers-sponsored spelling bee at Bank of America Stadium. Here’s how they placed at the national spelling bee:

1st round

Logan Edwards: Aegilops, given spelling: “edgelops”

2nd round (word meaning round):

Peyton Goldenstein

Given answer: linguistics that studies newly coined words

Correct answer: medicine concerned with newborn infants

3rd round:

Rex Dover: tutee, given spelling: “tutie”

4th round:

Ananya Rao Prassanna: doña, given spelling: “donnia”

5th round (word meaning round):

Rishi Jayakumar

Someone described as staunch is:

Given answer: easily frightened

Correct answer: constantly loyal

6th round:

Reyansh Joshi: dipylon, given spelling: “dipelan”
