PETOSKEY — Local homeschooling students will compete in a mock trial competition at the 90th District Court in Petoskey at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 21.

The Honorable Angela J. Lasher will preside, and several local attorneys and volunteers will serve as jurors.

The students, ages 13-15, have prepared both the prosecution and defense of a hypothetical murder case over the past 15 weeks.

The mock trial competition is conducted as an educational exercise. Organizers said the primary objective is for students to apply the analytical, rhetorical and critical thinking skills they have acquired through the study of formal logic to the application of the canons of rhetoric — invention, arrangement, elocution, memory and delivery.

The competition is jointly hosted by the Classical Conversations Challenge B Petoskey campus and Soaring High Christian Homeschool Group.
