Students can learn about hospitality industry at Poconos camp | Something to Think About

Leadership. Just what is leadership?

According to the Oxford Languages dictionary, it is a noun and defined as:

  1. The action of leading a group of people or an organization

  2. The state of being a leader

  3. The leaders (pl.) of an organization, country, etc.

While described as a noun, we all can likely agree that what we all want is our leader to show leadership as a verb.

We all hope that our future generations will take on responsible leadership roles. Perhaps you have a student in your household who aspires to become that verb leadership.

If so, there is a program that is being offered through East Stroudsburg University (ESU) Hospitality and Tourism Institute this summer called Leadership Development Summer Camp. The camp is a four-day program that runs from June 25 to 29 and provides campers with the opportunity to learn about career pathways within the hospitality industry right here in the Poconos.

Participants will have the opportunity to lean about careers through hands-on experience at locations throughout the Poconos.

The goal is to increase awareness about the hospitality industry, leadership, career development and networking opportunities with ESU’s corporate partners through classroom engagement, professional speakers and on-site experiences.

Campers will take property tours and be provided waterpark passes while they visiting both Kalahari Resorts and Conventions and Camelback Resort. Teamwork is part of leadership. Working as part of a team makes success much more likely. Attendees will participate in team building, recreation and leadership development activities that will be held at ESU’s 119 -acre wildlife sanctuary, Stoney Acres, located in Marshalls Creek.

The program is open to students in grades 9 to 12 in all high schools in Monroe County and a number of high schools in Northampton County and Allentown. The cost is $150 per camper and includes housing, meals and transportation to and from all properties and campsites.

There is a limit of 30 students in the program. The Leadership Development Summer Camp is sponsored by: PPL Foundation, ESU Foundation, the Hospitality and Tourism Institute and the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau.

This is a rare opportunity to peak inside the tourism industry. More about ESU’s Hospitality and Tourism Institute.is committed to fostering lifelong learning and career advancement within the hospitality community. It offers educational programs, career, research development programs and activities that prepares the student to achieve success in the industry.

A student attending the Leadership Development Summer Camp will check in between 4:30 and 5 on June 25th in the Hemlock Suites lobby (across from Kemp Library) with dinner following check-in.
