Students from Lenawee, Monroe counties earn AFL-CIO Central Labor Council scholarships

MONROE — Two high school students — one from Lenawee County and the other from Monroe County — are the recipients of scholarships from the Monroe/Lenawee County AFL-CIO Central Labor Council.

Adrian High School senior and recent graduate Lily Myers was awarded the $1,000 Bonnie Finzel-Doster Monroe/Lenawee County AFL-CIO Memorial Scholarship. From Monroe County, Ida High School’s Ajay Morelli was the other recipient of the $1,000 scholarship.

The presentation of the scholarships took place June 13 during a meeting of the labor council where each student read their essays written on the theme of “How the Union Has Benefited my Family.”

“On behalf of the Monroe/Lenawee AFL-CIO Central Labor Council, we congratulate Ajay and Lily,” Jason Matthews, president of the Monroe/Lenawee County AFL-CIO Central Labor Council, said in a news release. “We are proud and excited to award scholarships to these great students, strong leaders and community activists. The members of the CLC would also recognize and thank the scholarship committee for all the work it takes to complete this task every year.”

The scholarship committee is comprised of chairperson Mike Hayter and members Daryll Yarger, Jerry Young, Vinnie Fenech and Dan Brubaker.

Myers is the daughter of Kathleen Hart and Jacob Myers of Adrian. Jacob Myers is a member of the International Brotherhood of Electricians Local No. 8. Lily is a member of the National Honor Society and the Adrian High School Key Club, and she volunteers for Head Start. The release said she plans to attend Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, in the fall where she will study interior design.

Morelli is the son of David and Leah Morelli of Ida. He has been accepted into the University of Michigan where he will study economics. His father teaches at Ida High School and is a member of the Ida Education Association. His mother is a teacher at Monroe High School and is a member of the Monroe County Education Association.

The American Federation of Labor (AFL) and Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) is the largest federation of unions in the United States.
