Students net scholarships at Mount Union convocation

ALLIANCE – Each year, University of Mount Union honors graduating seniors and underclass students who have excelled academically, displayed excellent leadership skills and shown dedication to the university and community through outstanding community service initiatives. The following students were acknowledged at the Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation of 2023:

Cheyenne Brammer of Carrollton was awarded The Glenn E. Scott Prize in Paleontology. This prize is awarded to that student who has done outstanding work in paleontology during the current academic year.

Alex Burkhart of Canton was awarded The Oscar W. and Viola H. Dunn Bible Prize. This prize is awarded to that student who is of highest rank in the field of Bible study for the year.

Jarrett Burress of Robertsville was awarded The Eugene "Duke" Barret Coaching Prize. This prize was established in 2017 by Christi Barret, in honor of her father, Eugene "Duke" Barret, who was a multi-sport athlete, M-Club Hall of Fame Member and former head football coach at Mount Union. It goes to a male or female student from Mahoning, Stark, Portage or Trumbull counties who plans to pursue a career in teaching and coaching.

Adrienne Canestraro of Minerva was awarded The James E. Thoma Sport Business Award. The award was established in 2014 in honor of Mount Union sport business program visionary Dr. James E. Thoma through the generous giving of sport business alumni. This prize celebrates students who have demonstrated potential to be leaders, visionaries and day-to-day practitioners and personify excellence in the business of sports.

Alex Carrothers of Carrollton was awarded The Physics Faculty's Prize in Physics. This prize is awarded to students entering their fourth year of study in physics or astronomy.

Rae Carruthers of North Canton was awarded The Stephan Family Prize for Writing and The William H. Porter Sociology Award. This writing prize goes to a full-time student who has excelled in academic performance or writing for any Mount Union publication or an outside publication. This sociology award goes to a graduating senior sociology major who has attained the highest grade-point average within the major courses.

Sarah Conley of Canton was awarded The Laurie Kolenbrander Public Service Award. This prize recognizes a student who is exceptionally committed to public service at the University of Mount Union and within Alliance and the surrounding communities. The recipient clearly demonstrates a personal dedication to social change, prolonged and in-depth involvement, and initiative in a leadership.

Alexandra Cox of Alliance was awarded The Eric A. and Mary W. Eckler English Prize. This prize is awarded to a senior majoring in English language and literature whose scholarship has been most outstanding.

Danielle Daiger of Massillon was awarded The Charles and Ilene Hart Prize in Physics. This prize is awarded to a graduating senior with the highest academic standing in the Department of Physics.

Olan Domer of Carrollton was awarded The Robert I. Brainard Jr. Communications Award and The Dramatics Award. The communications prize goes to the student who has made the best contribution in the area of communications in the college newspaper, radio or yearbook. The dramatics prize goes to a senior student who is outstanding in the field.

Chloe Dragos of Canton received The Arthur Dimit Prize, which goes to a worthy student who demonstrates excellence in photography skills for the Dynamo, Unonian or other University activity.

Matthew Eversdyke of Alliance received The Sophomore Choral Award, which goes to a sophomore student in recognition of dedication, enthusiasm and devotion to the choral program.

Abigail Franks of Canton was awarded The Robert E. Hillier Family Scholarship. This award recognizes an outstanding student in the School of Business as a result of the investment strategies of the Student Investment Team.

Mary Hindley of Massillon received The E. J. Wulf Student Teacher Prize. The award was created by Ellen June (McDonald '47) Wulf to provide funds for student-teacher related expenses. This prize goes to the three seniors with the highest GPAs who are to be licensed in early childhood education.

Jeffery Joseph of Beloit was awarded The Clark and Sandra Albrich Archer Prize in Multi-Platform Software Development. This prize, established to recognize the accomplishments of an outstanding senior majoring in multi-platform software development, is based on GPA in the major, overall GPA, number of courses taken in the major for honors credit, and service to the community.

Jackson Kandel of Louisville received The Robert L. and Flora Curtis Kniveton Accounting Prize. It goes to an accounting major who has the best record in accounting.

Ashton Knappenberger of Massillon received The John E. & Helen W. Saffell Prize. This prize is awarded to a sophomore or junior majoring in English or history as a background for their future careers who is known to be good a good citizen of the campus and involved in extracurricular activities.

Justin Knoch of Canton received The Alumni Chemistry Award. It is awarded to the most outstanding chemistry or biochemistry major.

Fatima Magana Meza of Alliance received The Alfred Ringwald Prize. It goes to the student who, in the judgment of the faculty, stands highest in academic achievement in the Department of Literature and Communication Arts.

Chessie Misja of North Canton was awarded The Dr. Leonard & Gretchen Epp Biology Award and The Cynthia Ewing Scholarship. The Epp award goes to a traditional rising senior biology major who has shown exceptional motivation and made considerable contributions to the department. The Ewing award honors the wife of the university’s 10th president.

Bailee Nay of Hartville received The Jill Herrick Teacher Scholarship. It was established in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of Jill Herrick's graduation (in June 1965) from Mount Union College. The scholarship is available to one or two full-time undergraduate junior or senior students, majoring in education.

Austin Owens of Canton received The Hubert R. Pinney Senior Award in the School of Business, which goes annually to the student who has demonstrated the best overall academic record in the school.

Tori Richards of Sebring received The Richard L. and Connie VanderMeulen Doyle Prize. It goes to a student who shows great promise in the field of history.

Lilah Shernit of Canton received The Shea Zellweger Service Award. It goes to the senior majoring in psychology, neuroscience or human development and family science who, in the judgment of the department faculty, has made the greatest contribution by way of service to the campus and surrounding community during their university career.

Mollie Thomas of Canton received The Ethel Mellinger Award, which goes to an outstanding senior who is to be licensed in elementary education.

Aiden Trummer of Alliance received The American Bible Society Award, which goes to that student who stands highest scholastically in Biblical studies.

Micah Walker of Beloit received The Donna J. Michalek, Ph.D, Memorial Engineering Prize. The award, established in memory of Donna J. Michalek, Ph.D, goes to a graduating student who, in the judgment of the department faculty, best exemplifies the characteristics of an engineer.

Benjamin Wykoff of Jackson Township received The Music Faculty Award and The Outstanding Senior in Music Education Award. This faculty prize goes to the outstanding senior in music. This outstanding senior award includes the winner’s name being placed on a plaque in Cope Music Hall.

Joshua Yarnell of Louisville received The Judge Phillips Pre-Law Prize, which goes to an outstanding pre-law student at the conclusion of his or her junior year. Selection is based on scholarship, promise of future success, and character.
