Study: Eight Wilmington-area towns among NC's top places for expensive homes

A number of towns in the Wilmington area made a list of North Carolina's top places for expensive homes.

Stacker compiled a list of cities using data from Zillow. Data was available for 675 cities and towns in North Carolina. Cities are ranked by the Zillow Home Values Index for all homes as of July 2023.

Eight places in the Wilmington area made the top 30 list, with half of them in Brunswick County: Bald Head Island (3rd, typical home value $1,234,570), Holden Beach (12th, $820,130), St. James (19th, $668,154) and Caswell Beach (28th, $617,244).

Just ahead of Bald Head Island in second is Wrightsville Beach with a typical home value of $1,408,876, a five-year price change of nearly 84 percent. Joining Wrightsville Beach from New Hanover County is Kure Beach (14th, $733,142).

Pender County has two places on the list: Topsail Beach (9th, $893,419) and Surf City (23rd, $647,049).

With oceanfront property adding to the value, more than half of the top 30 places in the state are considered beach towns, including eight on the Outer Banks (Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo).

Biltmore Forest, just outside of Asheville, was first with a typical home value of $1,495,894.
