More and more Americans are moving to Indianapolis from large metropolitan cities, according to a new study conducted by Missouri-based moving company Mayflower Transit.

Indianapolis is among the top 10 midsize cities experiencing this migration trend. Mayflower's report states that midsize cities, like Indianapolis, which has a population of about 880,000, have strong communities and slower paces of life. But most of all, 91% of movers surveyed by Mayflower said that cost of living was a consideration.

While Indiana was recently ranked by CNBC one of the worst states to live in, with the lack of available, affordable child care and its anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ laws cited as the driving factors; Indiana's low cost of living still earned an A+ on the overall scorecard.

The study was based on household moves that Mayflower facilitated in the last two years within the 48 contiguous states and Washington D.C. In Indianapolis, 60% of people were moving to the city from other places.

“While larger cities have traditionally been associated with higher expenses, mid-size cities offer a more affordable lifestyle without compromising on amenities and opportunities,” Eily Cummings, Mayflower’s vice president of corporate communications, said.

"Our customers are sharing incredible stories of the importance of living near an abundance of outdoor space, where they have access to arts and cultural venues, some nightlife and less traffic," Cummings continued. "As the benefits of living in mid-size cities become more apparent, it is expected that this trend will continue to shape the future of urban living across the country.”
