Study: Muncie among cheapest U.S. cities for rent per square foot

MUNCIE, Ind. — The average renter in Muncie pays less than a dollar per square foot, according to a recent study that ranked the East Central Indiana city as one of the cheapest in the country for renters.

Research by New Jersey Real Estate Network, which analyzed data regarding monthly prices and square footage of rental listings in metropolitan areas with at least 1,000 listings, found that the average rent per square foot in Muncie is 86 cents per month.

That cost, according to the study, is 52% below the national average, which is $1.78 per square foot each month. When considering square footage, that 86-cent rate puts Muncie as the seventh cheapest city in America to rent.

Nationally, another Indiana city, Terre Haute, came in 10th on the list where renters get the most room for their money ― 89 cents per square foot.

Johnstown, Penn., topped the list, at about 20 cents cheaper than Muncie ― 65 cents per square foot per month, the study found. The top 10 cheapest cities to rent based on square footage, according to the research, are:

  1. Johnstown, Penn. ― $.65

  2. Decatur, Ill. ― $.69

  3. Pottsville, Penn. ― $.76
