Study ranks Columbus among US cities with the worst hotels

Columbus may have some of the worst hotels in the country.

In a study by travel website PlanetWare, the site independently analyzed 7.8 million TripAdvisor hotel reviews from over 95 cities to find the U.S. cities with the worst hotels.

The study was based on the percentage of TripAdvisor reviews with one or two stars.

Columbus tied for sixth-worst, along with Memphis, Tennessee, Tampa, Florida, San Antonio and Kansas City, Missouri.

Here are the top 10 U.S. cities with the worst hotels, including ties:

  • No. 2: Atlantic City, NJ; Virginia Beach, VA

  • No. 4: San Jose, CA

  • No. 5: South Padre Island, TX

  • No. 6: Memphis, TN; Tampa, FL; San Antonio, TX; Kansas City, MO; Columbus, OH

What makes a hotel 'the worst?'

PlanetWare based its findings on the percentage of TripAdvisor reviews with one or two stars.

The top complaints in bad hotel reviews are smoke smells, not enough toilet paper, bed bugs, thin walls and poor service.

Thankfully, Columbus didn't make the list of U.S. cities with the worst hotel service, based on the percentage of TripAdvisor reviews mentioning negative staff and customer service experiences.
