Study ranks Greenville No. 6 — behind Charleston, Richland — as most generous SC county

Greenville County has ranked 6th on a list of the most generous places in South Carolina in 2021, according to a study on the most charitable contributions by SmartAsset, a financial technology company.

In 2021, Greenville County residents donated 1.96% of their income to charity, according to the survey, with 9.03% of tax returns itemizing charitable contributions.

Greenville County ranks 277th in the nation, according to the study.

To find the most generous places, SmartAsset compared the amount of money people donated as a percentage of their net income and the proportion of people who made charitable donations.

Beaufort County took the number one spot in South Carolina with 2.05% of residents' income donated to charity with 13.33% of tax returns itemizing charitable contributions. Edgefield County took the bottom of the list at number 10 with 6.75% of tax returns itemizing charitable contributions.

In 2020, Greenville ranked number six again with residents donating 2.27% of their income to charity, according to the survey, with 9.69% of tax returns itemizing charitable contributions.
