Fenway transformed into a frozen wonderland for Winter Classic. Here’s what fans need to know

Boston’s beloved Fenway Park is in the process of being transformed into a frozen wonderland ahead of next week’s NHL Winter Classic game between the Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Drone video captured by a Boston 25 News photographer showed a hockey rink stretching across the ballpark’s infield, new signage atop the Green Monster and outfield walls, a special throwback Bruins bear logo in the outfield behind the sheet of ice.

An auxiliary rink is also being built behind the NHL rink and it will become an “Ice Diamond,” complete with Penguins and Bruins dugouts and a faceoff circle in place of the pitcher’s mound. It will host local youth hockey teams, special baseball activities throughout the game, and appearances by Boston sports stars.

Two entertainment stages are also being erected in the outfield and they will host musical performances throughout the game.

When the Bruins take the ice on Jan. 2, they’ll do so wearing the bear logo, which fans know most as the team’s secondary and shoulder logos from the late 70s to early 90s.

The logo is recolored to fit with a custom typeface that took inspiration from the Bruins logo of the 1948-1949 season. According to the Bruins, “the arched form of the wordmark is a subtle classic varsity reference and nod to New England amateur hockey.”

This year’s outdoor game marks the first time it has been played at Fenway since 2010 when the Bruins knocked off the Philadelphia Flyers 2–1 in overtime. The Bruins last hosted the Winter Classic in 2016, taking on the Montreal Canadiens at Gillette Stadium, falling by a score of 5-1.

The Bruins also played in the 2019 NHL Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium against the Chicago Blackhawks. They won 4-2 in front of 76,126 fans.

Hockey fans have been invited to a two-day, non-ticketed celebration festival ahead of the game at City Hall Plaza in Boston on Friday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The festival will offer family-friendly hockey interactive games and attractions, special appearances, and an opportunity to take a photo with the Stanley Cup.

The Winter Classic can be seen on TNT with the faceoff scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday.
