Fall colors are painting the North Carolina mountains, and stunning photos give a glimpse into nature’s annual treat.

Webcam footage and pictures shared to social media show autumn hues making their debut at popular spots for viewing leaves, including Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The seasonal transformation also has hit mountain towns such as Asheville, Boone and Hendersonville.

Though trees are bursting with color in some parts of North Carolina, the transition won’t last long.

Leaves in the highest mountains often reach their peak in late September. But fall foliage can be seen later into the season in Blowing Rock, Boone and other lower-elevation hot spots. Colors typically fade in early November, The News & Observer reported.

Some mountain destinations have already gotten glimpses of wintry weather. The week of Oct. 15, North Carolina’s first snow of the season was reported along the Blue Ridge Parkway. And Great Smoky Mountains National Park shared photos of snow falling over colorful trees as a lodge near the state line in Tennessee got a dusting on the ground, according to WNCN and the Smoky Mountain News.
