Stunning photos show summit of Mount Washington completely surrounded by undercast

Stunning photos shared by the Mount Washington Observatory showed the mountain’s summit completely surrounded by undercast at sunrise on Wednesday morning.

“Undercast completely surrounded the summit this morning. This has resulted in a variety of optical phenomena including a glory (second image) and a clear view of the mountain’s shadow,” the Observatory said in a Facebook post.

Undercast is a thick cloud layer caused by a temperature inversion from a mountain summit.

A temperature inversion is described as a “meteorological phenomenon that occurs when temperatures rise as altitude increases in a layer of air.”
