When you’re the king, sometimes they move your crown.

Fresh off its second consecutive Division II championship and seventh title overall, the St. Vincent-St. Mary boys basketball team was bumped up from Division II to Division I.

The announcement came Tuesday when the Ohio High School Athletic Association and its board approved the new divisions for winter sports during their June meeting last week.

Fall sports breakdowns were announced Monday. Spring sports realignments will be announced in September.

The OHSAA uses enrollment data provided by the Ohio Department of Education to determine each school’s base enrollment numbers for girls and boys sports, which will be used for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. Among the OHSAA’s winter sports, only basketball utilizes competitive balance data, therefore it is reconfigured every season. Sports that do not utilize competitive balance data are reconfigured every two years.

St. Thomas Aquinas and Malvern went from Division IV to III due to competitive balance.

Competitive balance helped Loudonville, which moved from Division III to Division IV.
