Twinkle lights are the solution to all your holiday decorating needs: Not only do they look festive strung on the tree, draped around the mantel, or lining window frames, but they can also substitute for the flames in your fireplace—like magic!

Tanya, the stylist behind the popular Instagram account houseofsixinteriors, used white Christmas lights to light up her fireplace. Since posting shots of her creation this fall, the idea has caught the internet's attention. So how can you recreate the look? It's actually pretty easy.

Take either several short bunches of string lights or a few extra-long ones and arrange them in large swaths around and under unlit logs. With a few simple nails, you can even hoist a strand or two up into peaks so that when they’re illuminated, they take on the shape of a real fire. You’ll get all the coziness of a lit blaze without having to make—and then clean—a smoking, ashy fire. No stoking, no fuss, no mess!

For more options, you can use dimmable LED lights so that you can adjust for either intimate flames or a roaring bonfire. And when you’re ready to call it a night, just turn off the lights. Even better, connect your fairy lights to a wireless switch, like Caséta by Lutron, and you can flick your fireplace on and off via remote control! Creating a wintry fire doesn’t get any easier than this. Now all that's left to do is figure out how you're going to style the mantel.
