Philippines protests China's 'threatening' South China Sea presence
The Philippines has sent two new diplomatic protests to China over its failure to withdraw what it called on Friday "threatening" vessels that were massing in contested areas of the South China Sea. The Philippines has ramped up its rhetoric in recent weeks over the lingering presence of hundreds of Chinese boats in its 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), testing relations between two countries that have sought to heal their historic rifts. The Philippine foreign ministry said maritime officials had observed the "continued unauthorised presence and activities" of 160 Chinese fishing and militia vessels around the disputed Spratly islands and Scarborough shoal, as of April 20.

Politics latest news: Senior Tories fear 'fight to the death' between Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings
Dominic Cummings accused of being ‘Chatty Rat’ leaker Border between England and Scotland could create jobs, claims SNP candidate Cameron repeatedly lobbied Bank for coronavirus cash Coronavirus latest news: PM under mounting pressure to lift lockdown as Wales speeds up roadmap Subscribe to The Telegraph for a month-long free trial Boris Johnson's decision to "go to war" with his former adviser Dominic Cummings risks backfiring, senior Tories have warned. The Prime Minister's former right-hand man was last night named by Downing Street sources as the person suspected of leaking text messages, with sources telling the Telegraph they believed he was "bitter" about the Government's success after his sudden exit last year. But several Westminster figures questioned the wisdom of such a move, warning it had blown the story up and "put the PM more in the spotlight". "A fight to the death between Cummings and the PM could be a real 'grab the popcorn' moment," said one former minister. "Cummings is a proper nasty piece of work who will have stashed the location of all the bodies... if Cummings can release one text exchange you have to assume he was busy screenshotting anything incriminating." Another senior MP said it appeared to be a dead cat strategy, designed to distract attention from other allegations. A former adviser who worked alongside Mr Cummings said Downing Street were "idiots... it's a war they can't win". He added: "Dom doesn't care about all this stuff and they're in gov. It's like the Americans going into Vietnam - they may be able to drop big bombs but in a war of attrition, the rebel always wins." Follow the latest updates below.

Ex-officer who killed Rayshard Brooks wants his job back
A former Atlanta police officer’s attorney said Thursday that his client didn't get a chance to defend himself before he was fired for fatally shooting Rayshard Brooks, a Black man who had been running away from two white officers after he resisted arrest and fired a stun gun at one of them. Officer Garrett Rolfe was dismissed “without a proper investigation” by the city on June 13, one day after Brooks' death, Rolfe's attorney, Lance LoRusso, told the city's civil service board as he argued for his client's reinstatement to the force, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The encounter outside a Wendy's restaurant last year started calmly but rapidly spun out of control when Atlanta police tried to handcuff and arrest Brooks, 27, for suspected DUI.

Israel says Syrian missile was not aimed at nuclear reactor
The Israeli military said Thursday that a Syrian missile that reached deep into Israeli territory and set off air raid sirens near the country's top-secret nuclear reactor was the result of a misfire and not a deliberate attack. The missile landed in southern Israel early Thursday, prompting Israel to respond with airstrikes on the missile launcher and other targets in Syria. The army's chief spokesman, Brig. Gen. Hidai Zilberman, was quoted as telling military correspondents that the Israeli air force was already operating in Syrian airspace when the anti-aircraft missile was fired.
